Re:Nylon
Nylon has long been a crucial material for Prada. The brand's debut in 1984 of Pocone nylon in its bag and accessory line won an international acclaim. Miuccia Prada later expanded the collection with nylon dresses for her eponymous label and Linea Rossa (the nylon-heavy, hypebeast-ready diffusion line that Frank Ocean recently decked himself out in at the Met Gala). The Milan-based powerhouse has transformed its iconic nylon bags into eco-friendly recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles - one belt bag (pictured) as well as a shoulder bag (pictured), bags for totes (pictured), duffle bags (pictured), and two backpacks - made of recycled ECONYL fabrics made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The material that is recycled is the result of a collaboration with Aquafil, a textile yarn producer in Italy which produces Econyl fabric from regenerated nylon waste. The fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger effort to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the line also includes a pair shoes and boots made from repurposed ECONYL as well as a range of apparel in the same fabric.
To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to produce a series of videos titled "What We Carry" that exposes the cutting-edge technology that goes into creating Re:Nylon bags. The first video includes Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, and National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
The Business of Fashion reports that Prada's move to re-Nylon is the biggest reduction in virgin nylon to date. It will save 70 000 barrels of crude oil per year. Moreover, the move will reduce the company's emissions by 57,000 tons. The label has recently gone fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the latest sustainable initiative.
Recycled nylon
Recycled nylon is not without its disadvantages. It's not biodegradable and can remain in oceans or landfills for decades before being broken down into smaller pieces that could cause harm to wildlife. The fabric is also not breathable and is able to shed microplastics once washed. visit the up coming post consumes 50% less energy to produce as compared to regular nylon and is more durable than other bag fabrics like wool or cotton.
The fabric is constructed from the waste plastic and petroleum that is made by burning fossil fuels. This means that it doesn't require for more natural resources as well as carbon emissions from production of virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bag materials, as it doesn't need to be dyed and weaved. This makes it a great option for bags used often, such as gym or yoga gear.
Recycled nylon is more durable and flexible than cotton or polyester, which are both traditional fabrics. It's also able to endure the most severe abuse, which makes it perfect for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. It is light and can easily be shaped and stitched into the desired shape of the backpack. Nylon is an excellent material for outdoor gear because it's resistant to water and doesn't take on smells.

When choosing a bag that is environmentally sustainable, look for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certification. This certification tests for chemical residues as well as environmental and social responsibility. This certification is an excellent indication of brands that are transparent and responsible.
Patagonia offers, for instance backpacks in a variety and yoga gear made from recycled nylon, called Econyl. This nylon is produced in a closed loop process that uses 50% less energy than virgin nylon. The brand also supports groups which are dedicated to protecting our planet.
